How to Choose the Right TV Wall Design for Your Home

A great TV wall is not about fitting the largest television possible. The TV, fireplace, soundbar, niches, lighting and finishes should work together as one balanced architectural feature.

Plan the Room First

Start With the Wall, Not the TV

Before choosing a layout, look at the wall width and height, ceiling height, viewing distance, doors, windows, switches and walking paths. Storage needs and the style of the surrounding room matter too.

A television can physically fit and still leave too little room for useful niches, a proportional fireplace or the visual breathing room that makes the design feel intentional.

HJN planning tip: Send a straight-on wall photo, approximate width and height, TV size, fireplace model and inspiration images before the design is finalized.

TV Size & Proportion

How TV Size Changes the Entire Design

The larger the television becomes, the less room remains for niches, shelving and balanced spacing. These diagrams show the design effect—not a universal sizing rule.

65” TV · Generous niches
75” TV · Balanced layout
85” TV · Reduced side space
98” TV · Cleaner layout

Bigger is not always better: for a very large TV, wood slats, stone, marble-look panels or a full-width drywall composition may look stronger than narrow decorative niches.

Niches or Clean Lines?

Choose Niches Only When They Have Room to Work

Niches are useful when they remain wide and deep enough for décor and when their lighting has room to spread. If a large TV forces them into narrow strips, the wall can feel crowded.

Good alternatives for large TVs

  • Wood slat or fluted-panel background
  • Flexible stone or marble-look panels
  • Geometric feature wall
  • Full-width drywall composition
  • Floating cabinet or media ledge

Sound Planning

Soundbar Placement Should Be Decided Before Framing

The soundbar changes the spacing between the TV and fireplace. Select its position—and preferably the exact model—before construction.

Below the TV

Visible, accessible and easy to replace.

Wall or TV Mount

Flexible when equipment may change later.

Recessed Niche

Integrated, but requires ventilation, access and exact dimensions.

Some homeowners prefer no soundbar for a quieter composition. Others want it recessed. A recessed opening should never block the product’s speakers, remote signal, ventilation or future service access. Read our complete soundbar placement guide for custom TV walls.

Fireplace Options

Choose the Fireplace Before the Structure Is Built

Two fireplaces marketed at the same width can have different openings, frames, depths and installation requirements. Always plan from the exact manufacturer specifications.

Front-facing or built-in: a familiar clean option for flat feature walls. This Belle Isle project includes an 80-inch Touchstone fireplace.
Three-sided: visible from the front and sides, with more projection and framing depth.
Water vapor fireplace with illuminated mist flame effect
Water vapor: creates a three-dimensional flame effect using illuminated mist. Depending on the model, it may use a refillable reservoir or require a dedicated water connection, electrical point, possible drainage and service access.
Extra-slim: useful when the new structure must remain shallow while maintaining a built-in appearance.
Premium flame systems: offer more realistic depth, movement, media options, colors and controls, depending on the model.
Wall-mounted electric fireplace compared with a recessed fireplace installation
Wall-mounted: generally simpler to install but projects farther from the finished surface than a recessed model.
Brands & Specifications

Compare the Model, Not Just the Brand Name

Touchstone, Modern Flames, Dimplex and Napoleon offer different fireplace formats. Specialized manufacturers also produce water-vapor systems. No single brand is automatically right for every wall.

Compare the exterior dimensions, visible flame area, framing depth, installation type, heat output, controls, warranty and service requirements. For vapor models, also confirm the reservoir or plumbing requirements and water-quality recommendations.

Important: HJN reviews the installation manual for the exact fireplace before final framing. Product specifications can change between models.

Lighting

Lighting Changes the Mood and the Materials

COB LED creates a continuous line of light and works well behind panels, below floating elements and around recessed shapes. Recessed lights can highlight larger niches, while RGB or adjustable-white systems provide more control over the room’s mood.

Drivers, dimmers, switches and service access should be planned before the surfaces are closed. Warm white light is especially effective with wood and stone finishes.

Budget Planning

What Affects the Cost of a Custom TV Wall?

Pricing depends on the wall size and height, materials, fireplace type, niche count, lighting, cabinets, soundbar placement and the electrical or plumbing preparation required.

A three-sided or water-vapor fireplace, Level 5 finish, natural stone, extensive storage or a tall wall will generally require more planning and labor than a simple panel-and-lighting design.

Because each project is different, HJN provides a scope-based estimate after reviewing the room, equipment and selected finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

TV Wall Planning Questions

What size TV fits above a 75-inch fireplace?

The right TV size depends on the wall width, viewing distance and the fireplace’s actual exterior and visible dimensions. A TV can be narrower or wider than the fireplace, but the complete composition should remain balanced. HJN reviews the exact models before finalizing the layout.

Do I need niches with a large TV?

No. When a large television leaves limited side space, a clean design using wood slats, stone, drywall or a continuous panel can look more intentional than narrow niches. Niches should remain large enough to be visually balanced and useful.

Can a soundbar be installed inside the TV wall?

Yes, a soundbar can be placed in a recessed opening when the selected model’s speakers, ventilation, controls and connections remain unobstructed. The opening should also allow future replacement and service access.

Does a water vapor fireplace need a water line?

It depends on the model. Some vapor fireplaces use a refillable reservoir, while others can connect to a dedicated water supply. Electrical power, possible drainage, water-quality guidance and maintenance access must be verified in the manufacturer’s instructions.

How much space should be left between the TV and fireplace?

There is no universal measurement. The correct separation depends on the fireplace manufacturer’s requirements, heat output, TV position, soundbar placement, wall height and the intended viewing angle.

How much does a custom TV wall cost in Orlando?

Cost varies according to size, height, materials, fireplace, lighting, niches, storage and required electrical or plumbing preparation. HJN provides a project-specific estimate after reviewing a wall photo, measurements, equipment and finish preferences.
