What Size TV Is Too Big for a Media Wall With Niches?
Plan a balanced media wall with niches by comparing TV size, fireplace width, soundbar placement and useful side space.
A TV Can Fit the Wall and Still Be Too Large for the Design
A television is too large for a media wall with niches when its actual width leaves too little room for useful display spaces, balanced margins, the selected fireplace and the soundbar. The limit is determined by the complete wall—not by TV size alone.
Before construction begins, HJN Home Services reviews the wall dimensions, equipment specifications and the homeowner’s priorities. A large TV may still work beautifully, but the strongest layout may use wood slats, stone, a backlit panel or a full-width drywall composition instead of narrow niches.
Start With the Wall Width, Not the TV Size
TV sizes are measured diagonally. An 85-inch television is not 85 inches wide, but its real width can still consume most of the central portion of a feature wall.
Measure the complete wall and account for doors, windows, switches, ceiling height, walking paths and furniture. Then compare the television’s actual manufacturer dimensions—not only its advertised diagonal size.
| TV size | Approximate width |
|---|---|
| 65 inches | About 57 inches |
| 75 inches | About 65 inches |
| 85 inches | About 74 inches |
| 98 inches | About 86 inches |
Approximate dimensions only. Always verify the exact model and its stand, bezel and mounting requirements.
How a Larger TV Reduces the Side Niches
The examples below use the same wall width. As the television grows, the niches become narrower until a cleaner niche-free layout becomes the better design choice.
65” TV
Generous niches with useful display width.
Generous
75” TV
Balanced center and practical side niches.
Balanced
85” TV
Side niches lose display and lighting space.
Reduced
98” TV
A clean layout often works better without niches.
No niches

How Much Space Do Niches Actually Need?
There is no single correct niche width. The opening must be large enough for the intended décor, drywall or trim borders, lighting distribution and comfortable visual separation from the TV.
If a large television reduces the side openings to thin vertical strips, the niches may stop being functional and make the wall feel crowded. Before framing, identify what will be displayed and measure the largest pieces.
- Useful interior width and depth
- Room for light to spread
- Space for drywall or molding edges
- Visual breathing room beside the TV
- Access to wiring and lighting drivers
- Proportion with the complete wall
The Fireplace and Soundbar Use Space Too
The TV is only one part of the center composition. Fireplace width, framing depth and soundbar placement all affect the spacing available for niches.
Choose the exact fireplace model before framing
Two fireplaces advertised at the same width can have different exterior dimensions, visible flame areas, depths and installation requirements. A fireplace that is too narrow can make a large TV feel top-heavy, while a wider fireplace may improve the balance if the wall has enough room.
Always follow the manufacturer’s installation manual and required clearances. Longwood: an 85-inch TV and 75-inch fireplace planned within a full-height composition.
Below the TV
Visible, accessible and easier to replace when equipment changes.
Wall or TV Mount
Flexible placement without building a permanent opening around one model.
Recessed Soundbar
Integrated appearance, but it requires exact dimensions, ventilation and service access.
The soundbar also uses vertical space between the TV and fireplace. Decide its location—and preferably the exact model—before the framing and electrical layout are finalized. Compare each option in our custom TV wall soundbar placement guide.
When a Large TV Works Better Without Niches
A large television does not require a plain wall. When side niches become too narrow, other materials can create depth and character without competing for width.
- Wood slats or fluted panels
- Flexible stone or porcelain
- Marble-look PVC panels
- Full-width drywall composition
- Geometric moldings
- Backlit center panel
- Floating cabinet or media ledge
- Perimeter COB LED lighting

Different TVs Need Different Layouts

Longwood
An 85-inch TV and 75-inch fireplace were balanced through a tall full-wall layout with asymmetrical illuminated niches.

Winter Park
Different niche sizes were designed around the client’s décor, flexible-stone backgrounds and IKEA storage.

A clean niche-free layout uses a wood-look panel, flexible stone and warm perimeter COB LED lighting.

TV Size and Media Wall Questions
Is an 85-inch TV too large for a media wall with niches?
Not necessarily. An 85-inch TV can work when the wall is wide or tall enough to preserve useful niches, comfortable spacing and a proportional fireplace. On a narrower wall, a panel, stone or full-width drywall layout may look better than small side niches.
How wide should side niches be?
Niche width should be based on the objects being displayed, lighting spread, border thickness and overall wall proportions. There is no universal minimum that works for every design.
Should the TV be wider than the fireplace?
It can be, but the relationship should look intentional. Compare the TV’s actual width with the fireplace’s exterior frame and visible flame area. The wall width and surrounding elements determine whether the composition feels balanced.
What size fireplace works with a 75-inch TV?
Several fireplace widths may work with a 75-inch TV. The best choice depends on the wall width, desired margins, soundbar location and the exact exterior dimensions of both products. Always plan from the manufacturer specifications.
Where should the soundbar go between the TV and fireplace?
It may be mounted below the TV, attached to a TV bracket or recessed into the wall. A recessed soundbar requires exact dimensions, ventilation, remote access and a practical way to replace it later.
Can I build a media wall without side niches?
Yes. Wood slats, flexible stone, porcelain, geometric moldings, backlit panels and floating cabinets can create a strong feature wall without using side niches.
Should I buy the TV before designing the media wall?
You should at least select the exact TV model before final framing. Its real width, height, mounting pattern and connection locations affect the completed design.
